Jes' Sketches

The Art of Jessica Leigh Wilkerson

1 note

Some character planning sketches.  These are my villains from essiart and my current story.
Queen Abital (raven) is the ruler of a tribe of cannibals.  Not sure that needs much more elaboration.
Costanzo and Elio are mad scientist types that don’t mind committing the occasional murder to get things done.
Quaholom (Himalayan Monal) is an evil high priest type guy.
North and West are two generals in charge of a particularly nasty group of humans.
Khuno (Stellar’s Jay) and Mekk (rook) are lackeys to one of Celeste’s villain dudes.
Nim is an evil spirit of chaos and destruction.  It likes to drive people insane and ruin everybody’s lives (and eat all their steak).
Eva (Himalayan Monal) is a spoiled rich girl who likes to torture people.  She’s Quaholom’s daughter.
Hakumei is a man who can raise the dead to fight for him.  He’s being used as a tool of destruction for West and North’s army.
Adria (European Starling) isn’t anything cool.  She’s just basically a playground bully.

Whoa.  I finished some character art!
This is Zara, my main character from a story that essiart and I are working on together.  She’s a flamingo birdy-person (or aviera, as they are called in the story) and she is a priestess-in-training.
She enjoys preening, standing on one leg, consuming small aquatic animals, playing with llamas and hanging out with homely raven boys.
In the initial sketch for this image, her wings were incredibly detailed and it just didn’t match with the rest of the drawing.  I mean, look at her hair.  It’s a cluster of blocky, simple shapes for crying out loud.  Highly detailed wings didn’t really go well with that.  So I took out all the detail I could, and added a bit of it back in with the highlights.  Does it work?  Do they still look like wings without all the detail?  I really struggled with this.
I do still draw my characters, though I don’t often get beyond a basic colored mugshot to flesh out their looks in my mind.  I will post some of those if people are interested in seeing them.

Drawings I did with a ballpoint pen because I was too out of it to look for a pencil.
Some familiar faces intermingled with (non-Sailor Moon related) OCs of mine.  These doodles were used to test Copic markers out on a couple different kinds of watercolor paper.  The top drawings were on a very textured kind of paper and the bottom drawings were on paper with a smoother surface.  I like the results for both.
Oh yeah, there’s a little bit of Martha Stewart craft paint on here too, on the night girl’s dress and the blue around Chibiusa.Chibiusa/Chibi Moon, Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury and Sailor Kakyuu belong to Naoko Takeuchi.
